More Than a Developer - Product Roles at Decision Time

The Decision Time product team are a group of hard-working, skilled and determined individuals who use their knowledge and experience to build secure, easy-to-use governance software used by over three hundred organisations across the UK and Ireland.

There is a myth that developer jobs are just about computer screens full of code. At Decision Time we believe in user-centred design, so our developers are often much more customer-facing. Strong people and communication skills are a fundamental part of working here.

We asked three members of our product team to tell us more about their roles:

Lisa, a UX Designer & Front-End Developer, talked about her role in understanding the customer's needs and turning them into designs:

"My focus is on design and on the users' experience of our software, making sure everything we do is intuitive and straightforward. I am passionate about making sure their experience is as effortless and stress-free as possible. I talk to customers, empathise with them and understand their pain points. I then bring all of this customer research together to define the problems we need to solve.

Having defined the problem, I can use all this research and user knowledge to design prototypes and interfaces. Other developers can then take the designs and prototypes and use them to implement the new features.

After we release a new feature, I also collect user feedback to help us understand how the system is used and what lessons we can learn to keep improving."

Gavin, an experienced Software Developer, talked about his experience of combining his technical and people skills in his role:

"I like working with people. I also like working with technology, so combining the two is pretty much the perfect role for me. One of my strongest skills is how I speak and communicate with people. Getting to use that skill as part of my development role is probably one of the biggest advantages of this job.

The team at Decision Time is phenomenal too. So, people in general, both the customers and the people I work with, are what I enjoy most about this job."

Bill Morrison is our Head of Security and Infrastructure and talked about the challenges in his role:

"Delivering web-based applications means we must always have a clear focus on security and reliability. Continual change in the industry, new technologies, and new threats mean that it is essential always to learn and keep on top of best practices.

With such a large customer base, all the work we do behind the scenes must be carefully planned and carried out so that there is no downtime or adverse impact on the customer. When we do our job right, our users notice nothing except a reliable, secure, fast product."

Decision Time is continually growing and developing new features, processes and technologies to help our customers. We pride ourselves in having a great company culture, being Highly Commended for the Best Place to Work - Small Organisation in the Irish News Workplace, and Employment awards 2019.
